The project diverts human sanitation waste from pit latrines in the informal settlements of Nairobi, as well as diverting organic waste from Nairobi's landfill. Without the project the waste would decay anaerobically and produce methane. The waste is treated aerobically via black soldier fly rearing and composting, producing high-protein animal feed and organic fertilizer, while also abating the baseline methane emissions.
