Addressing biological and social challenges in wetland ecosystems
This project restores one of the most important wetland biodiversity hot-spots in Croatia's Vrana Lake and the surrounding area of Ravni Kotaro. These wetalnds are vital for biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is recognised as an important wetland habitat because it is in an otherwise dry environment. The project focuses on strategic assessments, site restoration, and sustainable grazing, engaging local communities. The conservation status of the wetland habitats has been in decline for a long time now and they are in dire need of restoration.

Volunteers were taught practical planting skills, from choosing a location, digging a hole of the right depth, and properly covering the plant with soil, to ensuring additional food sources.
Collaborative volunteer work resulted in the planting of 60 carefully selected seedlings along an 800-metre strip. This green barrier will visually isolate the area, giving birds a greater sense of safety. This is important as Lake Vrana has become a popular nesting and feeding spot for numerous bird species.
Around 40 volunteers took part in a tree-planting event in the Vransko Jezero Nature Park to create a green barrier that will provide birds with additional protection from noise and traffic. Participants included students and teachers from a local High School, Biom volunteers, and volunteers from the 'Solidarity for Natural Heritage' program of the European Solidarity Corps.
