Pinwheel partner Acción Andina wins the Earthshot Prize
We are delighted to share our congratulations to our partner, Global Forest Generation Projects, Acción Andina, winner of the third annual EarthShot Prize in the Protect and Restore Nature category.
The project in the Andes Mountains in South America is a grassroots initiative centred around a commitment to work together for the common good.
It unites tens of thousands of people from local and indigenous communities to protect native forests and ecosystems. When asked what the prize money meant to him, Constantino Aucca, president of Acción Andina, stated
“it's a million trees, it is a million bits of hope, it's a million ways to open new doors.”
Established in 2020 by Prince William, the Earthshot Prize is considered one of the world's most prestigious environmental awards; created in order to discover, spotlight and help grow innovative solutions that are working to repair and regenerate our planet. Acción Andina was selected from thousands of nominations received each year, down to 15 finalists to become one of 5 winners! With each winner being awarded the catalytic £1 million to help scale their solution.
Prince William stated that the climate crisis has
“become too visible to be ignored...[and in an optimistic tone that] I choose to believe that future generations will look back on this decade as the point at which we globally took collective action for our planet. The moment we refused to accept the voices of denial and defeatism, and instead, became the architects of change towards a healthy and sustainable world.”
Sir David Attenborough, one of the Earthshot Prize Council members, stated that
“we can live both well and responsibly on our planet...tonight, we celebrate those who are leading the way to this better future.”
